Neurofilament light chain (NfL) is a nonspecific biomarker of axonal damage and neurodegeneration that is extensively used in clinical settings. This protein is a subunit of a bigger protein complex called neurofilament, (Nf) which is essential to maintain the axonal integrity of the neurons. This complex is also composed of subunits of neurofilament heavy- and medium-chain as well as α-internexin in the central nervous system (CNS) or peripherin in the peripheral nervous system (PNS).
