Insulin-like growth factor–binding protein-1, also known as pregnancy-associated α1-protein and placental protein 12, is a major secretory product of decidual cells.233 It is one of several proteins that bind IGF-1 and IGF-2, affecting the ability of these growth factors to interact with the IGF receptors. Consequently, the binding proteins can have significant roles in modulating IGF effects. The protein undergoes post-translational modification by phosphorylation, which increases its affinity for IGF-1 and therefore its ability to neutralize IGF-1 action.
